As a lineage holder of Karma Kagyu, His eminence Shamar Rinpoche was a great Buddhist Master who touched upon lives of many through His profound teachings all over the world. I have known Rinpoche for many years and I and my family will always remember Shamar Rinpoche as a close and dear friend.
The 14th Kunzig Shamar Rinpoche, (Sahamarpa) the lineage holder of Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism passes away, leaving His disciples and followers in state of shock and sorrow. Kudung (physical sacred remains) of Shamar Rinpoche, have been brought to Delhi for followers to pay their last respects.

With grief and prayers we announce the sudden demise of The 14th Shamarpa, Mipham Chokyi Lodro, in Germany on 11th June 2014. His Holiness Shamarpa also designated as The Red Hat Lama of Tibetan Buddhism was the lineage holder of Karma Kagyu sect of Buddhism, one of the main four Schools of Tibetan Buddhism, with followers spread across continents. The Shamarpa lineage is the second-oldest reincarnate lineage in Tibetan Buddhism, dating to the thirteenth century.

On the dawn of June 22nd the ‘Kudung’ of Shamar Rinpoche, accompanied by His Holiness Karmapa Thaye Dorje arrived at the Karmapa International Buddhist Institute (KIBI) in Delhi, for followers and patrons to pay their homage to the great leader and Spiritual Master.

In KIBI, continuous prayers and chanting are being held led by His Holiness Karmapa for Shamar Rinpoche. From June 22nd to July 1st, His followers and patrons can visit KIBI,(the official seat of HH Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje) at Qutub Institutional Area, Delhi, to offer prayers for His early reincarnation so He could join His followers soon.

From KIBI, on July 1st, the Kudung of Shamarpa shall be taken to the Shri Diwakar Vihara Buddhist Research and Educational Institute at Kalimpong and then to His final destination Shar Minub Monsatery, Kathmandu (the Seat of Shamarpa) where His remains shall be put to rest on July 31.

Two days after his passing and on the auspicious holy full moon day of Saga Dawa, Shamar Rinpoche left the special meditation state after death showing all the signs of Buddhahood.

There are condolences and messages pouring in from all over the world. HH Karmapa offered His condolences to His teacher and mentor, “Sadly, His physical manifestation has left our material world. Yet He was and continues to be our teacher and his aspirations and blessings will remain with us always. We must dedicate our merits and practice to Him. So we must ask for His return, in order to benefit and guide us all towards enlightenment.”

His Majesty the Fourth King of Bhutan Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck - “As a lineage holder of Karma Kagyu, His eminence Shamar Rinpoche was a great Buddhist Master who touched upon lives of many through His profound teachings all over the world. I have known Rinpoche for many years and I and my family will always remember Shamar Rinpoche as a close and dear friend.”

His accomplishments as a dynamic spiritual leader will benefit sentient beings for years to come. Shamar Rinpoche did not encourage most of his students to become monks and nuns, instead emphasizing the ideal of being a lay person who studies and practices Buddhism. He initiated organizations and social work in the Himalayan region in India. Greatly believed in helping people in old age, underprivileged and he was a firm believer in animal rights.

Shamar Rinpoche’s unexpected death has left thousands of his disciples in Asia and the Western world greatly saddened and in a profound state of shock. He was a great teacher, orator and has authored books-Transparent Democracy, The Path of Awakening, Boundless Awakening:The Heart of Buddhist Meditation and A Golden Swan in Turbulent Waters: The Life and Times of the Tenth Karmapa Choying Dorje.
